Jesus said, “You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me” (John 5:39). According to John 5:39, the Scriptures witness to Christ because they testify about Him, and a diligent search of the Old Testament points to Him being the Messiah. Jesus said that the religious leaders were studying the Scriptures for eternal life, but the scriptures themselves bore witness to Him and pointed toward the life He offered. This includes numerous prophecies about His life, death, and resurrection, and even the writings of Moses that spoke of Him. Jesus states that the Scriptures are the very source that testifies about Him, meaning that the entire body of work bears witness to His identity. Scripture witnesses through prophecies that are fulfilled. The Old Testament contains many prophecies about the Messiah, such as the tribe He would come from, the location of His birth, His suffering, and His resurrection, which were all fulfilled in Jesus. Scripture witnesses through the fact that Moses wrote of him. Jesus specifically points to Moses, the author of the first five books of the Old Testament, and states that Moses wrote about Him. Scripture witnesses by pointing to the Source of life. Jesus's words in this passage serve as a warning that merely studying the Scriptures isn't enough to gain eternal life; one must come to Him, the one to whom the scriptures point, to receive it. The Scriptures should lead to belief in Christ: Rather than being seen as merely a collection of moral teachings or an account of history, the Bible, when properly understood, should lead a person to have faith in Jesus Christ. What may we reasonably conclude from our examination of the evidence in this case? All the evidence, and there is an abundance of it, points to only one sane conclusion, and that is that Jesus is the Son of God, the promised Messiah, and Saviour of the world!
