It’s no surprise that many Christian writers affirm the role of persuasion in bringing people to faith. For example, William J. Abraham (1992), in his book, The Logic of Evangelism describes evangelism as initiating persons into the kingdom through persuasion, conversion, catechesis, and involvement in the sacraments. When we seek to persuade (however poor we are at it!), God seeks to convict, and people come to faith by hearing the Good News of salvation that we bring. As we have already reflected in these reflections, we can’t save anyone – it is quite beyond us! But we can seek to persuade others, if we so choose. I’m not suggesting that we should become overly forceful, overbearing, or intimidating. That’s not Jesus’ way. Manipulation, intimidation, and domination belong to the occult, not Christianity. Sadly, there have been so-called “Christian’ cults that have used these immoral and toxic measures, but they are anathema to God. The power in true evangelism comes from Him. Our part is to share, and to graciously persuade as the Holy Spirit inspires us in the moment. Remember that however weak your argument may be, the Holy Spirit will be working to convict your hearers, and under the conviction of God, some at least will say ‘Yes’ to Jesus.
