It’s impossible to understand the image of God unless we know the love that made us. When we look more closely at the Love that formed us, we learn more about Love’s nature and character. In the creation account of Genesis, there’s a little word that some have called ‘the biggest little word in the Bible.’ It’s the word ‘us.’ God says, “Let Us make man.” Why would God speak of Himself in the plural if He were not a relational being? Here at the beginning of the Biblical revelation is our first introduction to the plurality of God and the fact that He is a relational being, a Trinity: one God in three persons.
Imagine a perfectly loving relationship, and you have begun to see the Trinity. There is perfect unity of relationship in the Trinity, perfect oneness, for ‘God is love’ (1 John.4:8).
