The closer we are to God, the harder it is for us to be overwhelmed. No one is ever going to overwhelm Him, which means that the safest refuge will always be by His side. This is the promise of Isaih 43:2. "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you." Sometimes God allows us to go through experiences that break unhelpful aspects of our thinking or our life, but this is always liberating and draws us closer to Him. This is not the same thing as being overwhelmed. In fact, it leads to greater spiritual strength and wellbeing. He also allows us to go through times of difficulty and testing, but He promises to be with us as we go through them, and to deliver us, until our work on earth is done. From such trials as God allows, we emerge ever stronger in Him.
