When Simon meets Jesus, something remarkable happens. Jesus looks at him and says:“You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (Gk: “Σὺ εἶ Σίμων ὁ υἱὸς Ἰωάννου· σὺ κληθήσῃ Κηφᾶς” ) (John 1:42). This is far more than just a change of name. Notice the progression in Jesus’ statement. He starts, “You are Simon” (a name meaning ‘to listen’ or ‘to hear’), and He moves quickly to, “You shall be Cephas” (a name which means ‘a rock’). Do you see the significance of this? Not merely for Simon, but for everyone who decides to follow Jesus! Jesus knows who you are. He knows everything about you, and He fully accepts you as you are with all your sins, shortcomings, and failures. He sees it all: your pain, your past, your hopes, your dreams, your secret fear, and most importantly of all – the Divine destiny God has planned for you, for Jesus alone can make you the person you were destined to be.
