Hunger for What is Right

Driving prosperity

Have you ever lamented over the state of things on earth, particularly as you have seen so much suffering and pain, including that unnecessary suffering caused by human evil? If so, Jesus has a word for you. It’s a word of encouragement that describes what happens when we bring our righteous hunger to God. Jesus said, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled" (Matthew 5:6). The Greek uses strong language here: peinōntes kai dipsōntes (πεινῶντες καὶ διψῶντες), which literally means starving and parched for what is right. Do you crave God's righteousness like a man dying of thirst craves water? Jesus says that if that’s your desire, God will satisfy you, not with the cheap thrills of this world, but with His own presence, His own holiness, His own Son. Only Jesus can satisfy that hunger, not merely in your own heart, but also in the hearts and lives of those around you. When godly men and women begin to hunger for righteousness, lives and societies are changed for the better. You know that you are spiritually prosperous when you long for what is right.
