Today's Early Church Wisdom
“It is the Christians, O Emperor, who have sought and found the truth, for they acknowledge God…. They show love to their neighbours. They do not do to another what they would not wish to have done to themselves. They speak gently to those who oppress them, and in this way they make them their friends. It has become their passion to do good to their enemies…. This, O Emperor, is the rule of life of the Christians, and this is their manner of life.”
~ Aristides (written around 137AD)
This week's Psalm is Psalm 31 'My Rock, My Shield, My Song'

Get Directions

Whether we use a map, take guidance from others, or use a SatNav, we all need directions to reach a destination we’re unfamiliar with. But sadly, many take more trouble getting directions for their journeys than for their life. God knows how important it is for us to find our way through this troubled world and fulfil His purpose for our life. That’s why the apostle Paul writes, “Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ” (2 Thessalonians 3:5). He points his readers to the only One who can direct their lives properly. Notice that he does not emphasise behaviour here. Yes, what we do matters greatly, but Paul knows that the heart is the first place where Divine guidance and grace is needed. If the heart is right, the best behaviour will always follow. As we daily practice His presence and imagine Him speaking with us, we will learn to discern His voice and our hearts will be illuminated by His grace. Not only that. Faith will arise afresh within our soul, so that we may follow His leading with patience and perseverance. This is what Paul calls the ‘patience of Christ’. It’s a straight choice: wander in life’s wilderness or chart a clear course to glory!
