People vary in their outlook on life, and we celebrate their freedom to choose their perspective. But some perspectives are more conducive to wellbeing than others! For example, those who choose a gloomy outlook and demeanour rarely look as though they are enjoying themselves! Please don’t misunderstand me here. I know that we all have different temperaments, but that’s not what I am talking about. Whatever our personality, we can choose at any time to develop a better mindset, that is, the way we see things. The Bible provides a great picture of the kinds of mental outlook that lead to true inner happiness and peace. One of these is captured by the apostle Paul when he says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again, I will say, rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4). He’s talking here about what we might call a ‘rejoicing mindset’, a position of gratitude to God and celebration of His love, from which we choose to see our life and our world. Around us on every side there may be troubles and challenges, but the world within is under our control. If we wish, we may choose to cultivate such a viewpoint, and when we do, however dark our situation, our souls are filled with light from Heaven.
