What sort of things do you think about during an average day? Obviously, we have many duties, tasks, and responsibilities to attend to, but what is our mindset as we approach and perform them? And what do we choose to think about when we are at rest? Many today suffer from a diminished sense of what I might call ‘mind power’, and this often includes a sense of being unable to control their own mind. When they discover (or rediscover) that their mind is their servant, and that they have the authority to determine what goes on there, they usually start to make real progress towards effective mind management. Scripture has much to teach those who choose to train their mind, and at the heart of its teaching is the advice to diligently seek God. The apostle Paul writes, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2). The earth will always seek to get our attention, for it is the object of our physical senses, but when we choose to fix our inner eyes on Heaven, we begin to know Heaven’s peace and light, even in the midst of earth’s uncertainty and darkness. To ‘set’ something is to establish it permanently. Let us lift our eyes to things above and keep them there!
