It should not need to be said that all coercion, intimidation, and domination, have no place in the sharing of the Christian gospel. Not only are those who try to ‘strong-arm’ people into the kingdom wasting their time. They are also in danger of undermining the work of the kingdom and bringing the excellent Name of Christ into ill repute. When people are coerced into compliance, their seeming commitment will be of little or no lasting value, for in their heart they maintain a different position. Such ‘converts’ whether to Christianity or any other ideological position, are unlikely to stay long, but at the first opportunity they will likely revert to their earlier position. We thus conclude that not only is such an approach morally indefensible, but that from a pragmatic point of view, it simply doesn’t work! Contemporary persuasion research emphasises that resistance increases when listeners perceive manipulation, identity threat, or excessive pressure, making humility, dialogue, testimony, and relational credibility psychologically more effective than confrontational argumentation.
