Acknowledging Spiritual Poverty

What does it mean to be poor in spirit? John Stott wrote, “To be poor in spirit is to acknowledge our spiritual poverty, indeed our spiritual bankruptcy, before God” (Stott, 1978), while Martyn Lloyd-Jones observed that this beatitude is “a complete absence of pride, a complete absence of self-assurance and of self-reliance” (Lloyd-Jones, 1959). In these present end times, when the world increasingly glorifies independence, power, materialism, and human wisdom while drifting further from truth and holiness, Christ’s words shine with even greater urgency, reminding believers that the only secure foundation for tomorrow is a daily walk and living conversation with God through prayer, Scripture, repentance, and communion with His Spirit.
