Jesus’ leadership of the church He founded continues in our day, and any who wish to may daily seek His face, hear His personal word to them, and follow His guidance. As they do, the church represents the Holy and Life-Giving Trinity on earth, the Good News is preached, and the message of salvation goes to the nations. If we choose not to listen, the church ceases to represent God accurately and falls into error and decline. What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? Is it enough simply to attend a Christian church? Is it enough to admire Him and agree with His teaching? Is it enough to simply identify as a Christian? All these choices suggest that the individual is a follower of Jesus. They reflect just a few of the many ways in which we may experience, express, and enjoy our personal relationship with Him. But could there be more to following Him than these expressions alone? The New Testament suggests that there is. Jesus said, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4,5). What did Jesus mean by “Abide in Me?” I think it’s clear that He’s talking about relationship. It’s as though He’s saying, “Stick with Me,” “Stay close to Me,” “Remain with Me.” May this be our choice today.
