Leaders matter. A good leader leads forwards in the pursuit of noble goals. He or she understands authority, for leadership neither begins nor ends with the leader. It always raises a question, and the question is: “Who leads the leader?” A leader led by an assistant or subordinate is a puppet, a leader led by alcohol is unstable, a leader led by greed will always act in their own self-interest, and so on. You get the picture? The greatest leaders will always be those led by the Spirit of God. One of the defining features of the leadership dynamic in the first church was the reliance of all on Jesus for guidance and direction. The leaders of the first church did not solely depend on their own wisdom or insight; instead, they consistently sought Jesus' guidance in their decisions and actions (James 1:5, Proverbs 3:5-6). This practice ensured that the church remained aligned with Jesus' teachings and mission, fostering a community deeply rooted in faith and obedience to God. We are all leaders in some way and at some level. But who’s leading us? Who’s at the helm, steering the ship?
