Today's Early Church Wisdom
While still living in the palace, Abba Arsenius prayed to God in these words, 'Lord, lead me in the way of salvation.' And a voice came saying to him, 'Arsenius, flee from men and you will be saved.'

What Will Be Our Reward?

Because God has planned our path, by taking it we will ultimately receive a great reward. What we build in life matters. It not only matters in this life, but it has repercussions for eternity and our eternal place. Whilst everyone will be saved who calls on the name of Jesus, there will be rewards for service in the world to come. As the apostle Pauls makes clear: “According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward” (1 Corinthians 3:10-14, ESV). When we listen to Jesus and do what He commands, we build with gold, silver, and precious stones, and we will receive a reward. Be assured, “that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:24, ESV). It is never too late to start building for eternity. Jesus said that whoever gave a cup of cold water to a thirsty child of His would not lose their reward! So, let us build as He directs. Better an eternal heavenly reward than a fleeting earthly one!
