Sometimes people don’t look where they are going, and obviously this can get them into trouble. It pays to keep your eyes open in life. But what if we only go on appearances? How successful will we be? How happy will we be? Experience tells us that there’s more to life than simply how things look. I guess this is perhaps truer than ever today, living in our world of rhetoric. I remember my young son coming to me one day and saying, “Dad, I have something to tell you.” “What is it?” I asked. He replied, “You can’t tell a book by its cover.” He had clearly learnt an important lesson. Not only that there is more to life than simply what is seen, but that appearances can be deceptive. We need to look beyond, or behind, what appears, and if we are truly wise, we choose to look and listen to God. When we decide to daily walk and talk with Jesus, faith arises in our hearts, for faith comes by hearing God’s word. Whatever God has said (whether it agrees with what we see or not) is the truth that we can and should stand upon, even where circumstances seem to contradict it. The apostle Paul makes this clear when he writes: “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Faith sees a bigger reality and from a better angle – the perspective of Heaven! As we dare to walk in faith, believing what God has said, miracles will happen some small, some great, because God’s power changes things.
