I have observed two errors that we may make when it comes to maintaining a position. The first is that of being obstinate when we should change, and the second is that of being moved when we should stand firm. There are various factors that may influence which error we fall into, including the strength to which we hold our principles and values, our perception of the situation facing us, and our own unresolved issues. If we are to transcend all bias generated by such factors, and make the best choice possible, there is only one place to go: the presence of the Lord. For it is in the active experience of His presence with us, listening attentively and diligently to His voice, that we will know when and how to react. This principle is implicit in the apostle Paul’s advice to the Corinthians when he writes: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58). To truly be ‘in the work of the Lord’ we must remain on the presence of the Lord, abiding ‘in’ Him as directed by our Saviour. Otherwise, we will work without proper instruction and direction. From this place of abiding in Him, we may safely and rightly choose to be steadfast and immovable, taking great joy in the fact that this, our labour, is never in vain, and that at the end we will receive the reward from God that is appropriate to our obedience.
