Sometimes we may struggle to finish a task. The task may be difficult, or we may be distracted by other duties. But not God. He always finishes His work, including His work in us. We all need working on if we are to become more like Him. His image is something we have by virtue of our creation, but His likeness is something that we must become. At salvation we are born again by the Spirit of God, and our human spirit is made entirely new, a spotless new creation. But our mind must now be renewed, and this is a process of progressive transformation that takes place as we daily walk and talk with Him. You are a work in progress, and as the apostle Paul writes, you can be “confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). The Holy Spirit’s work in you will not stop, but it will continue until you are made perfect. The eastern church describes this as a process of deification. This is something that only He can do. Even before its completion, we will feel and know the great benefit of His work in us, as our thinking, our motivation, our emotions, and our behaviour change for the better. The key is simply to be diligent in looking and listening to Jesus, for only He is “the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2).
