There are two expressions of friendship that seem to be particularly valuable in relation to outreach. These are respect and helpfulness. Friendship is an interesting dynamic in that despite knowing much about the other person (including their weaknesses!), we show them affection, respect, and positive regard. This does not mean that we approve of everything they do or say, or that we always support them or their actions, but that even where we may disagree on many things, without compromising our values or our integrity, we seek to remain a compassionate friend. A true friend is ready to challenge or oppose where necessary. It has been said that there are times when ‘Love must be tough’. It may often be easier to keep quiet, but love dares to confront what is wrong. As Scripture says, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend” (Proverbs 27:6). This includes challenging those who do not yet know God. Out of love and respect for them, we reach out and share the good news of salvation, the news that they desperately need to hear. May our love be true, and our message clear.
