What does the term ‘revival’ means to you? Many of us think it’s good to see a longing for ‘revival’ in the church, but what do we mean by this word? In colloquial English the term ‘revival’ may be used to describe an increase of interest in anything, but whilst this is a perfectly valid use of the word, it’s usually taken to mean something a little different when used in relation to spiritual life. In a theological context, the concept is generally understood as being more akin to the literal sense of the word, that is pertaining to something or someone being restored to life. If revival is seen as the restoration of a living form to life, whether that’s an individual or a group, then it must be said that only God can bring revival, and that revival comes only from His Spirit. Medics can stimulate a body through electrodes, but only God can revive it. Scientists can play with genetic materials, but only God can give life. Worshippers can sing a song a thousand times and get excited, but only God revives the church. It’s the Spirit that gives life. This means that revival is impossible without Him. As soon as we connect with the Spirit of God, life flows, and that’s revival!
