Today we are looking at another example of the power of attitude. Behind our thoughts, our feelings, and our actions, lie influential attitudes that help guide our experience and behaviour. We may have a ‘bad’ or unhelpful attitude that continually undermines our life and our happiness. Or we may choose to develop godly attitudes that help build us up in God and extend His Kingdom on earth. One such attitude is found in 1 Thessalonians 5:16, where we are encouraged to “Rejoice always” (1 Thessalonians 5:16). I don’t believe that this means we should laugh and sing when we should be weeping. In fact, scripture exhorts us to “weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15). Rather, this verse is referring to an attitude that we have chosen to adopt – an attitude of rejoicing. In other words, we have decided to approach life with a thankful heart, giving thanks to God in all things, even when the going gets tough, or we suffer loss. Yes, we will still feel the pain in times of grief, and it is right to express it, but in all our life there runs a golden thread of joy that no darkness can take away. In the words of the Christian poet and mystic William Blake, “Joy and woe are woven fine, a clothing for the soul divine.” Let us therefore ensure that we choose many rich threads of joy as we weave the fabric of our life.
