It is one thing to be filled with the Holy Spirit. It is another thing to be anointed by the Holy Spirit. To be filled is to be changed, progressively transformed into the likeness of God by the Spirit. It is the heart of personal revival. But there is a second way in which people may be moved by the Spirit, and that’s when the Holy Spirit falls upon them. We’re talking here about an outer rather than an inner phenomenon. A person who comes under the Spirit’s anointing may exhibit the gifts of the Spirit and even move in miracles, signs, and wonders, but their heart may or may not be right with God. Obviously, the ideal is for us to be both filled and anointed, but not everyone is what they seem. Jesus highlights this dichotomy in His description of the judgement to come commanding those whose hearts are not right to depart from Him, saying, “I never knew you.” (Matthew 7:21-23).
