The first church was a community in which miracles, signs, and wonders regularly occurred. These were a direct consequence of the Spirit’s outpouring at Pentecost. As undeniable demonstrations of God’s love and power they were responsible for drawing many into a personal relationship with Him. The apostles played a prominent role here, and many noteworthy miracles occurred at their hands, validating their message. One of the most notable of these was the healing of a man lame from birth by Peter and John at the temple gate called Beautiful (Acts 3:1-10). This miracle not only brought physical healing but also led to a powerful witness for Christ, as the healed man’s testimony drew widespread attention and awe. Acts 5:12-16 records that the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. The believers met regularly in Solomon’s Colonnade, and people brought the sick into the streets, hoping Peter’s shadow might fall on them as he passed by. Crowds gathered from towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and it appears that all were healed. To the degree that an individual or group is filled with and anointed by the Holy Spirit, supernatural events will take place including miracles, signs, and wonders.
