Managing our fear of external events

One of the best things we can do when anxious is to go to God and hear His word on it. His word brings faith. That’s what King David did at Ziklag. The Amalekites had raided his camp and taken away the women and children as hostages. David’s men wanted to kill him, but in all this danger and uncertainty, David did what wise men do. He sought the Lord and received a word from Him that enabled him to deal with the threat most effectively. Let’s read the story. “Now it happened, when David and his men came to Ziklag, on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, and had taken captive the women and those who were there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way. So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive. Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep. And David’s two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive. Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God” (1 Samuel 30:1-6). There’s comfort and strength for you from God in every anxious situation you will ever face in this life, but you must go and get it. If you don’t go to God and listen, you’ll stay anxious and upset. Let me ask you: How have you chosen to see your surroundings? How have you chosen to view your situation? How have you chosen to think about the difficulties and challenges that stand in your way? Know today that your choice will make a big difference, not only to how you feel, but to how you fare!
