Knowing When to Speak

Walking in God's timing

The year is A.D. 27, and Jesus is 30 years of age. He has been baptised by John in the Jordan river, and He has been tempted by Satan in the wilderness. Now He is about to call His first disciples. John the Baptist is standing with two of his disciples when he sees Jesus walking by and declares, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” (John 1:36). John knows that Jesus is the Messiah. It’s something he has known all his life. It’s reported in scripture that whilst he was still in the womb, he leapt for joy when Mary who was pregnant with Jesus came to visit her cousin Elizabeth, John’s mother. On that visit Elizabeth refers to Mary as “the mother of my Lord.” John knew who Jesus was, and he also knew that this was the right time to reveal this fact to the two disciples he was with. How important it is that we observe the Spirit’s timing in all our dealings with others. Some mistakenly think that just because they know something, they should say it. Such people have yet to learn the importance of timing. If we will daily walk and talk with Jesus, He’ll show us when to speak and when to keep silent.
