Know Your Enemy

Jesus said that Satan is a liar, a murderer, and a thief. His criminal activities amongst humans go back to the very beginning of life on earth. The Biblical book of Genesis tells us about those beginnings. For example, we discover that the first people enjoyed wonderful blessings before their relationship with God was broken. But why did it all go wrong for them? That’s a question people often ask when they stand in the wreckage of a broken relationship or a failed project. It’s also a question that’s often asked by psychotherapists who may ask a client, “When did this problem start?” or “When did you first become aware of it?” In the case of the first humans, problems began when Eve was tempted to look outside of God for her happiness. She didn’t do this out of need, for all her needs were fully met. She did it as a direct result of deception. Satan is a deceiver. He lied to Eve that God was depriving her of the best, and that if she ate the fruit that He had forbidden them to eat, she would be better off, indeed that they would be like God, knowing good and evil. The great irony is that she was already like God, having been created in His own image, but Satan tries to trick people into turning away from God, and on this occasion he succeeded. Satan’s nature hasn’t changed. He lies to people today, as he has always done. When did he last lie to you?
