Obedience to Jesus’ directions will always lead to success. I’m talking about success as Heaven sees it – true success. This includes building your ministry and mine. Whatever He tells us to do will directly or indirectly add souls to the kingdom, for He has called us to be fishers of men. This was the symbolic meaning of the great catch described in Luke 5:1-11. We read that the nets overflowed and were breaking. “So they signalled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink” (v.7). There’s a lesson here, and it is this: Ask for help when you need it. That’s what they did – they signalled to their partners to help them. Some don’t ask out of pride. They will not humble themselves and admit their need or their inadequacy. Others don’t ask out of fear. They are afraid that others may reject them or despise them for their need. Some don’t ask out of a competitive and divisive spirit. They don’t want others to share in the glory or the rewards of victory and success, perhaps because they are selfish and bound by greed. Let us die to self that we may live to Christ.
