Forgiveness

A gift of great value

Jesus asks us to forgive, but some things are much harder to forgive than others. We often hear people say things like, "It was too bad for me to ever forgive," and we can understand why they would say that. Some people's ill treatment is so bad that we shudder in horror when we hear of it. How can God ask us to forgive such things? Firstly, let's be clear that this is not a 'whitewash'. No one is asking us to deny the evil or the wrong. Forgiveness is quite separate from how we see sin. If evil, sin, and death do not upset us, we need to ask whose side we are on! When we forgive, we don't lose our abhorrence of the wrong, but we do break its hold over us. Secondly, we don't forgive because it's deserved. Sometimes we hear people saying that someone deserves to be forgiven. No one deserves to be forgiven, and forgiveness is only made possible by the Cross. Forgiveness is a gift we give and receive, not a product we sell or buy, It's a gift of the greatest value. Thirdly, forgiveness is not a feeling - it's a decision. Few people ever feel like forgiving. If we wait to forgive until we feel like it, most of us will wait forever. And if, having forgiven, we expect to suddenly feel as though the wrong never happened, we may be very disappointed. Forgiveness happens when people decide to forgive, not a moment before. Do what you believe to be right, and the feelings will follow in time. Who should you forgive today?
