Much human conversation is what we might call ‘small talk’. It is not profound, but it is safe, and people in every culture on earth rely upon it for safe and pleasant interactions with others. Though ‘small talk’ may have its place, to only communicate in this way is to remain at the surface of life, avoiding the sharing of deeper reflections, questions, and feeling states. Evangelists can work with small talk because it can create a place of felt safety and growing rapport, from which, when the time seems right, the disciple may begin to share other, more meaningful truths. We have seen the power of building rapport in our earlier reflections. By taking a sincere and genuine interest in the other person, and whatever they are sharing, however trivial, we may gain a place of connection or friendship with them, and such a place is of inestimable value for the gospel because when it is reached and established, the other person will be significantly more open to receiving the good news of Christ. If you have a desire to share your faith with others, don’t see small talk as a waste of time, but as an opportunity to make a friendship connection that will open the door to the gospel!
