Conversational Moments of Opportunity

You have probably observed that even where people are heavily reliant on small talk in their day-to-day interactions with others, there are moments when they may say something that suggests, or points towards, something a little deeper. It could be anything, but you can sense from their comments, and perhaps also their tone of voice, that there’s a back story, a deeper thought or concern. These expressions can provide a further opportunity for the evangelist, if sensitively responded to. If you watch out for them, you will increasingly identify these moments of opportunity. We’re going to consider a particular example of this over the next few days, and it concerns those moments where a person says something that reveals a ‘mismatch’ between their beliefs and their behaviour. But before we do, may I encourage you to start listening today for these kinds of comments and responses.
