An invitation to communion

Amongst all the guidance that Jesus gave during His ministry on earth as a man, there are some commands that stands out as being of particular importance. One of these is something He said at what we call 'the last supper'. He was about to go to the Cross, and He spent His last evening eating with His disciples. At the end of the meal He took bread and wine, representing His body and blood, shared it with them, and told them to do the same. The first believers were faithful to do as He had asked. Just like people in all ages, they had friends and family they spent time with, talking, sharing, and eating together. This was all they needed to fulfil Jesus' command. For the 'breaking of bread' became a natural conclusion to their shared meals, and the Agape was born, which was the central celebration of the first church at Jerusalem. The Agape (Gk. 'Love') was simply a shared meal of love and friendship which concluded with the sharing of bread and wine in memory of Christ and His sacrifice. Jesus has never rescinded this great command, which means that we too may decide to have an Agape meal with our friends, in our own home, sharing bread and wine together in thanksgiving for the Cross. Why not be a first century believer today? At the beginning church was not a building - it was your home!
