'Just as a lamp lights up a dark room, so the fear of God, when it penetrates the heart of a man illuminates him, teaching him all the virtues and commandments of God."'

Cross-Cultural Outreach

As we have seen, the need to be relevant to another person’s culture is something underlined by contemporary writers. For example, Timothy Keller highlights urban apologetics (being relevant to minority communities), cultural engagement, and plausibility structures as necessary elements for evangelism in ‘post-Christian’ societies. The more we realise the power of cultural connectedness, the more open and ready we will be to engage with other cultures different to our own. People generally tend to prefer the safety and familiarity of their own culture, and this may hold some back from reaching out to other groups. Scripture tells us that, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28), encouraging us to see others through the lens of God’s love for all. Let us be those who move towards other cultures, as moved by the Holy Spirit, learning from them and leading them to Jesus.
