Valuable though cultural awareness is, we know that being relevant involves more than simply knowing a culture. Amongst those who have stressed the importance of relevance in evangelism, Donald McGavran (1988) research on church growth emphasised not merely measurable disciple-making, but a recognition of people movements, and the value of a contextually relevant outreach strategy. In his book, Effective evangelism: A theological mandate, McGavran also highlights the need to avoid replacing gospel proclamation with social action, important though the latter is. To be more effective in outreach, let us be open to the Holy Spirit showing us aspects of another person’s environment that are important to them. For example, whatever the person’s cultural background, if they are facing serious financial challenges, or in a place where they are unable to access the medical help they need, these are serious concerns, and as compassionate disciples we will want to stand with them.
