Choosing God

The first people were deeply connected to God. They were united with Him in a perfectly loving relationship, and they drew from Him all that their souls required. Unlike God, they were dependent beings. God is a non-dependent being – the only non-dependent being in the universe. He is dependent on nothing. But we are finite, limited, and in deep need of a love beyond ourselves. We are dependent beings, wonderful but limited creatures. When we depend upon ourselves, we are always disappointed, and ultimately disillusioned. In our self-dependence, our lives are narrow, limited, and lacking, but when we choose to depend upon God something wonderful happens, that is like a chemical reaction. This is a reaction in which we do not lose ourselves, but we gain God. Something happens on the inside of us, and we are never the same again. This is spiritual chemistry, and by it we begin to draw from God the same vibrant quality of life that the first people enjoyed.
