One of the most striking outcomes of the Holy Spirit's empowerment was the newfound boldness and authority exhibited initially by the apostles, and then by the first church community as a whole. Peter, who had previously denied Jesus three times, stood up with the eleven on the day of Pentecost and delivered a powerful sermon that resulted in the conversion of about three thousand people (Acts 2:14-41). This boldness was a direct consequence of the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence. As a psychologist of religion, I have observed this change in those who are Spirit-filled many times. People who are by nature quiet and reserved often become confident communicators of their faith, yet without losing their personality or character. How we need the boldness of the Holy Spirit if we are to clearly and confidently share the truth of God's love in a lost and hurting world. Even those who are by nature more outgoing desperately need this gift as there will be times when anxiety or fear may hold them back. Let us pray, as Saint Paul did, that we may have boldness to say and do what the Lord has said and done.
