Humans often make things more complicated than they need to be. This can be as true in matters of faith as in any other area of life. We hear voices saying “Do this!” or “Do that!”, but Jesus said that one thing was needed: to simply attend to Him. It’s crystal clear from what He said that He wants us to enjoy a close friendship. If that’s something we want too, it’s easily realised. All we need do is daily walk and talk with Him. As we daily practice His presence with us, imagining Him speaking with us, taking to heart and following what He says, our lives will bear much fruit, just as Jesus promised they would. It’s very simple, but not everyone chooses it. In the first Christian community at Jerusalem in the first century, this simple lifestyle of daily walking and talking with Jesus appears to have been normative, which is why the apostle Paul talks of “Not knowing anything amongst you but Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:2), and the writer of Hebrews speaks of “Looking unto Jesus” (Hebrews 12:2).
