Have you always kept your promises? There may be times when even the best people are unable to keep promises they’ve made in good faith, but I’ve always taken a dim view of those who regularly break their promises. Thankfully, God always keeps His promises. Before His ascension, Jesus Christ promised His disciples that they would receive the Holy Spirit, who would guide, teach, and empower them for their mission. This promise was fulfilled on the day of Pentecost, as described in Acts 2:1-4. The disciples were gathered in one place when a sound like a mighty rushing wind filled the house, and tongues of fire appeared and rested on each of them. All were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. This event marked the public appearance of the church and the commencement of its mission to spread the gospel to all nations. As we receive a fresh daily infilling of the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ promise to draw all humanity to Himself is fulfilled a little bit more through our witness (John 12:32). Only the baptism in the Holy Spirit guarantees a life of peace, presence, and power.
