Whilst we walk with God, everything will work out and we can know peace in our heart. It’s not that our lives will be free of difficulties, but that God’s grace will help us, and He will see us through the good times and the bad. It’s not unusual for people to seek happiness and fulfilment apart from God. We’re surrounded by people doing that, and we ourselves will at times be tempted to do things our way rather than God’s. If you are a believer, can you recall when this last happened to you? If you’re not yet a believer, you need to come to faith, because you will never be able to live your life to the full apart from God! Sin, in the form of rebellion against God, invades and destroys human happiness. Though it may take many different forms, sin is, at its heart, a declaration of independence from God. Whenever we reject Him and His will, choosing instead our own way, this always leads to loss, to suffering, to pain, and even to death. And for as long as we choose our own way rather than His, we will suffer. Quoting the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, the writer Dorothy Sayers says, ‘Hell is the enjoyment of one’s own way forever.’
