There’s no doubt that some people have a particular gift when it comes to developing groups. But we must always remember that they are not the only builders. I was once the foreman on a building site. I don’t think I was a particularly brilliant manager, but I would have been completely useless if all my men had walked off! Whatever our particular gifts, you and I are called to build the church – not just any church, but a church with all the simplicity, power, and authenticity of the first ekklesia at Jerusalem. It’s not about constructing grand buildings or having a great business plan, helpful
though these might at times be, but something more personal and far more powerful: building the church as the first Christians did – right in your own home. If you have a home, a heart for God, and a desire to see people grow in faith and purpose, you already have everything you need to begin. The first church was not a public building that people went to – it was a family they belonged to. It was a living, loving, breathing community, centred around Jesus, meeting in homes, sharing meals, praying, learning, and growing.
