It is natural to feel helpless in situations that appear out of our control. Believing or feeling that we are in control can reduce our anxiety and boost our confidence. When our ability to control outcomes is compromised, what do we do? Rather than assume that things are out of control, the wise remember that God is with them and commit control into His hands. Humans often struggle to relinquish control to God, but when we do, we begin to breathe the air of freedom. This is why the psalmist writes, “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). He recalls to mind the fact that God is not only present with him in his trials and difficulties, but that He is actively working for good, and will give us all the grace and help we need to endure, as His victorious agents.
