When Congruence Reflects Credibility

What does it take to be seen as credible? One of the principal ways in which credibility is demonstrated, is through congruent words and actions that reflect integrity, and the lack of an evident ‘rhetoric-reality gap’. Many writers have highlighted the value of such authenticity. It’s a powerful feature of effective communication, and one which the evangelist should seek to demonstrate. This is what we might call an authentic congruence, where the character of the person is directly reflected in the harmony and unity of their total message (through words, intonation, and body language). In contrast, it is possible to identify an inauthentic ‘congruence’, for congruence can be faked, and often is by those who would seek to influence others, but whose hearts are not united with God. According to Scripture, Satan can present himself “as an angel of light” and one of the ways he does this is through individuals he empowers to appear credible when they are not.
