Through their preaching, both John and Jesus urged their hearers to change their minds about where life was to be found. And they didn’t leave it there. They each went further than simply encouraging their hearers to turn from sin. They pointed them to the Kingdom of Heaven, and by so doing they proclaimed a counter-cultural, revolutionary message to their generation. Why was this such a revolutionary message? Because it clearly stated that Heaven’s rule had broken into Earth’s darkness. That God’s promises were being fulfilled. That the reign of God, His peace, His justice, His mercy, was now accessible through the Son of God Himself. This message offered a radically different way of life to anyone who would hear it. As a psychologist I have often asked people what they believe about life. Sometimes I have even asked them to complete what in psychology we call a sentence-completion test. That’s when you give someone the first half of a sentence and ask them how they would complete it. In this case the question was, “How would you complete the sentence, ‘Life is …’” How would you complete this sentence? Your first uncensored response will say something about you that you may need to be aware of.
