What else do we know about the resurrection of the righteous? We read in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 that they are ‘in’ Christ. Paul writes: “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” What does it mean to be ‘in Christ’? The short answer is found in 2 Corinthians 5:17… “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” From the moment we are born again we are ‘in Christ’. But you will have observed, I’m sure, that there are degrees of being in Christ. You can be just in, or you can be deeper in. Being in Christ is a state that can deepen. It can get stronger, or it can remain relatively undeveloped. Sadly, there are many who once made a commitment to Jesus but who, for various reasons, have not gone deeper. Ideally, to be "in Christ" is to have a deep, intimate relationship with Jesus through faith, which brings a radical transformation, forgiveness for sins, and new identity in Him. It involves being spiritually united with Jesus, where what is true of Him becomes true of you. This attitude or position is expressed in daily walking and talking with Jesus.
