We sometimes say that good friends are ‘worth their weight in gold,’ and they can be hard to find. But if we ourselves are friendly, there is a real likelihood that sooner or later a good friend will be found (Proverbs 18:24). We know that this same key ingredient in building relationships with others, is also one of the most powerful ingredients of successful outreach. Such is the power of sincere friendship. Friendship’s value in outreach is well supported. For example, in psychology Robert Cialdini’s research on influence (1984, 2006) identified reciprocity, liking, social proof, authority, commitment, and consistency as central mechanisms of persuasion, all highly relevant to evangelistic hospitality, testimony, and communal witness. In all our dealings with others, and particularly in our meetings with those who have not yet met Jesus, let us seek to be likeable people. Don’t forget that you are coming to them with a gift, the greatest gift that can ever be given, the gift of salvation and eternal life.
