The Power of Oneness

United with God

One of the greatest facts underwriting the efficacy of the atonement is the truth that Jesus was one with His Father. Jesus actually said on one occasion, “I and My Father are one“ (John 10:30). And if that were not enough, He went on to pray that we also might be one with Him and His father. He prayed this at the conclusion of the Last Supper, and His words are recorded for us by John in chapter 17 of his gospel. He said, “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word…I pray for them… I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me” (John 17:6,9,20-21). The connection, or oneness, we enjoy with Jesus has some very exciting implications for our life. We should never underestimate the power of alliances, the power of unity, the power of agreement. Unity can be a very powerful force. We read in the Old Testament that the main reason why God destroyed the tower of Babel was that its builders shared a common language and were united together in their exploits. If human unions can be strong, how much more powerful is our union with God!
