In becoming knowledgeable of a culture and its ways, we should take care that we maintain our discernment, for not all that we discover will be good. Our aim is to be familiar with the culture but not to fully subscribe to its ways in our heart. It is as though we aim to be ‘in’ the society, but not ‘of’ it. However sensitive we are to cultural dynamics, we will always be representatives of another culture, the kingdom of God, and as ambassadors of that culture we bring an influence far above the earthly. And it is as Heaven’s representatives that we talk about our encounters with the King and His ways. Generally speaking, people are always interested in the supernatural, so if we ‘talk their language’ they will be more likely to hear ours. Every outreach opportunity is, in a sense, a meeting of two cultures: heavenly and earthly. May our words of witness, spoken on earth, come from a heart grounded in Heaven’s truth and love.
