How do you like to express love? Psychological research shows that we all have different
preferences. The same appears to be true in relation to how we like to be loved. In recent years there has been an increasing interest in ‘love languages’, the kinds of words and actions that make us feel loved. It’s good to know what love looks like both for us and others, but self-awareness and sensitivity to others can only take us so far. It’s only when we team up with the Holy Spirit that we may begin to enjoy the rich tapestry of love’s
expression to the full. Only the Spirit searches the deepest things of both man and God. The first church, filled with the Spirit, was a place where love could take many healthy forms. These included, but were not restricted to, acts of service. Believers were known for their generosity and willingness to support one another. This was evident in the communal sharing of resources, where those with more would provide for those with less. This practice ensured that no one in the community was in need, reflecting the selfless love that Christ had demonstrated.
