It’s not uncommon for humans to look for love in all the wrong places. The need for acceptance and belonging is so strong that people will sometimes compromise their values or even their morals to meet this need. Sadly, it’s a little-known fact that our sense of acceptance begins in a relationship with God (Ephesians 1:6). This is not to deny that love takes different forms or that human relationships don’t matter. They do, and God is the first to affirm this (Genesis 2:18; Psalm 68:6). But however blessed human relationships may be, they can only ever be channels of love, for love has a source and that Source is God. As the apostle John puts it, “We love Him because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Comingfrom God and having its source in Heaven, this is a love that transcends personal feelings and preferences, focusing instead on the well-being and
spiritual growth of others. In the context of the first church, Agape love was the driving force behind their communal living, mutual support, and unwavering commitment to the teachings of Christ. Importantly, this love was a deliberate choice made by the believers, irrespective of their personal feelings, reflecting a commitment to live out the teachings of Christ through their actions. To live in love is to daily go to its Source and be filled afresh.
