What was the human leadership of the first church like? The first thing that must be said is that this was a culture in which all were seen as having a ministry role, and as such all were leaders. Clearly the apostles were the principal leaders of the infant church, but there were in addition a growing number of leaders who served as shepherds in the house fellowships of which the first church was made up. Additionally, there were those who served in other capacities, both practical and pastoral. The leadership structure of the first church in Jerusalem, as portrayed in the New Testament, provides a compelling model of Spirit-led, Christ-centred governance. It was characterised by a shared responsibility among appointed leaders, an organic growth of ministries based on spiritual gifting, and a deep commitment to the lordship of Jesus Christ. This leadership was not hierarchical in a worldly sense but functioned through servant leadership and mutual submission, with Christ as the head of the Church (Ephesians 5:23; Colossians 1:18). Leadership in the first church was function- rather than status-based Ask God to show you your work for Him, for when you find your purpose in the church you find your leadership
role.
