What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? Is it enough simply to attend a Christian church? Is it enough to admire Him and agree with His teaching? Is it enough to simply identify as a Christian? All these choices suggest that the individual is a follower of Jesus. They reflect just a few of the many ways in which His followers may experience, express, and enjoy their personal relationship with Him. But could there be more to following Him than these expressions alone? The New Testament suggests that there is. Jesus said, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:4,5). What did Jesus mean by “Abide in Me?” I think it’s clear that He’s talking about relationship. It’s as though He’s saying, “Stick with Me,” “Stay close to Me,” “Remain with Me.”
