Our good character is central to our success in evangelism. We must be trustworthy individuals. Why is this so important? The answer is simple. We are unlikely to believe, or even to listen to, those we do not trust. As people interact with a trustworthy person, they are significantly more open to changing their position. We are called to be that person. It’s good to check our own integrity from time to time, to ensure that we have not let slip those core principles and values that are essential to abundant life. Am I being honest in my dealings with others? When did I last tell a lie, and why did I do that? What promises have I made to others, and have I kept them? Have I been open where possible, or have I concealed too much? Have I been authentic, or have I hidden behind a false persona? These are just a few examples of the kinds of questions we might ask ourselves, as we seek to maintain a life of integrity and to continue to build good character. Unhealthy businesses and unreliable people often fail to keep their financial accounts up to date, and the result is often some kind of failure or loss, perhaps bringing stress or even, in extreme cases, bankruptcy. As in the natural human realm, so in the spirit. If we are wise, we will take regular stock of our character, checking the degree to which we are profitable or unprofitable servants. One day God will hold us to account, so let us begin that accounting now, that the Holy Spirit may do His work of transforming us into the likeness of Christ.
